Description
About artist: Kathrine Geoghegan is a visual artist living and working in Straffan, County Kildare, Ireland.
Kathrine’s practice is concerned with conservation, habitat and the preservation of wild places. With a particular interest in peatlands, she wishes to raise awareness and increase knowledge of the importance of different habitats through her paintings of botanical forms. She describes native plants in their natural habitat, those plants that some might call weeds, so important for biodiversity.
Kathrine has had 8 solo exhibitions. Her work has been acquired by the OPW for the State Collections, and her paintings feature in corporate and private collections. Kathrine is a patron of the Irish Peatland Conservation Council.
About artwork: Pollardstown Fen near Newbridge, County Kildare is not far from my home. A fen differs from a bog, as it is fed by a fresh water source as well as rainfall. This allows a greater variety of plants to survive amongst the reeds and rushes. Pollardstown Fen is fed by the Liffer aquifer, and hosts a very special creature, Geyer's Whorl Snail. This tiny creature is the 'Canary in the mine' for the water quality of the fen, and is therefore very important and protected. Indeed this snail held up the N7 motorway extension until a solution was found to bypass its habitat. This is a special and inspiring place, where nature is largely left to its own devices. Light and weather conditions change constantly, inspiring the painting Rain and Sun, Pollardstown Fen
